Guests from Sweden discussed sustainable development issues in Ukmergė
On 31 May - 1 June, representatives from our Partner City Mariestad ( the Kingdom of Sweden), Maria Gustavsson and Janne Jansson, visited our city.
Mayor Darius Varnas, Inga Pračkailė, Director of Administration, and Vaida Skinkytė, Chief Specialist of the Strategic Planning, Investment and Business Development Division of the Ukmergė District Municipality, welcomed the guests at Ukmergė District Municipality.
Ukmergė District Municipality, together with the municipalities of Mariestad and Kamianets-Podilskyi (Ukraine), is implementing the International Project "Sustainable Urban Development". Due to the situation in Ukraine, the representatives of the latter municipality were unable to attend the meetings and therefore participated remotely whenever possible.
On the first day of the visit, the guests visited Ukmergė Jonas Basanavičius Gymnasium, where the director Saulius Grigas familiarised them with the environment of the gymnasium, and the students presented their educational companies and their activities - "ROSE", which is creating "690U", the scent of the city of Ukmergė, "Stiklo Kraitė", which is producing handmade glass products, and "eXprontas", which is making moulds for baking biscuits.
The Swedish delegation also visited the Antanas Smetona Gymnasium in Ukmergė, where the director, Adolfas Girdžiūna, presented the activities of the Gymnasium and the museum. Geography teacher Dalia Vaičiūnienė and students from the gymnasium gave presentations on sustainable development and presented their activities in the field of sustainability.
Accompanied by the director Klavdija Stepanova, the guests visited the Art Department of the Ukmergė School of Art, explored the students' exhibition, visited the classrooms and got acquainted with the educational work environment.
"Ukmergė has a lot to be proud of," commented the guests after their visit to the schools.
On the next day of their stay, the Swedish delegation visited Ukmergės šiluma UAB, where its Director, Vydas Paknys, gave a presentation on the company's activities and issues of sustainability.
Later, at the municipality, Gintautas Monkevičius, a member of the Council of the Lithuanian Solar Energy Association, consultant of "Telepartner" UAB, presented the Action Plan for the Development of Renewable Energy Use in the Ukmergė District Municipality, and Inga Pračkailė, Director of the Administration, gave presentations on the renovation of multi-apartment buildings, the Food Waste Collection Campaign in Ukmergė, and plans and practices for sorting textiles, bulky waste, asbestos waste and tyres Saulius Bagdonas, a consultant of "Telepartner" UAB in the field of hydrogen technologies, also participated in the meeting. The presentations were followed by a discussion, questions were answered, experiences and knowledge were shared.
During the two-day visit, the guests toured the Old Town of Ukmergė, the parks, walked along the newly built path along the Šventoji River, visited the Ukmergė Local History Museum, the manors of President Antanas Smetona and Taujėnai, and the castle of Siesikai.

Representatives of the municipality visited Mariestad Municipality from 14 to 17 November to discuss the aforementioned project.
