Two new towns from Ukraine have become foreign partners of Ukmergė

The 29th of April is a historic day for Ukmergė district municipality. It was the day when two new towns Korosten and Krasyliv from Ukraine became foreign partners of Ukmergė.

Due to the never-ending war in Ukraine, Rolandas Janickas, the mayor of Ukmergė district municipality, Volodymyr Moskalenko, the mayor of Korosten town municipality, and Nila Ostrovska, the mayor of Krasyliv, signed international bilateral cooperation agreements remotely, connecting via ZOOM platform on the Internet.

Both signed cooperation agreements - between Ukmergė district municipality and the town of Korosten and between Ukmergė district municipality and the town of Krasyliv - state that “the parties, taking into account mutual interest, agree to expand economic, cultural and tourist cooperation, strengthen friendly relations, and also, if necessary, help providing each other with monetary support, charitable or humanitarian aid”.

Mayors of both Ukrainian towns thanked Ukmergė and its residents for extending a helping hand - they have already received two humanitarian aid packages each.

“This is a happy historical moment. Your willingness to help and cooperate with us in such a difficult time is worthy of great respect and is very important not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole Europe. We would like the news about such municipalities to spread as widely as possible. You are a great example of how every European municipality should work and think about the future. We would like to hope that the leaders of other municipalities will learn about what you did and why you did it, why it is important, and follow this example. What is happening in Ukraine now has a huge impact on all Europe, every country, and every municipality in it. Even if someone doesn’t feel or understand it yet. Thank you for being there, thank you for what you do,” Ukrainians said.

Cooperation agreements with the towns of Korosten and Krasyliv were signed by the decision of the Council of Ukmergė district municipality. The Council meeting took place on the 28th of April, on the eve of the signing of the contracts.
