Ukmergė delegation visits Italy to learn best practices in tourism development
On 14-21 October, implementing the International Project "Five Steps for Successful Local Tourism Development", representatives of the Ukmergė District Municipality Administration, Ukmergė District and City, Vilnius and Šalčininkai Local Action Groups (LAGs) visited the southern Italian region of Basilicata.
Ukmergė District Municipality was represented by the Director of Administration Inga Pračkailė, Head of the Social Support Division Asta Leonavičienė, Deputy Head of the Education, Culture and Sports Division Lolita Gerulskienė and Senior Specialist of the Strategic Planning, Investment and Business Development Division Reda Liubomirskienė.
The participants visited a number of tourist sites, met with local authorities and shared best practices. They visited family-run businesses, where they were impressed by the quality of the service and the friendliness of the staff, and learnt about the possibilities to bring young people back to the regions and how to motivate them to work together with their families. The farmers' persistence in preserving local traditions to produce their unique products was also inspiring.
While visiting the most beautiful towns of the region, the Lithuanians got acquainted with the magnificent cultural and historical heritage of the region, they saw and discovered many good examples of how to use the existing historical heritage not only to attract tourists, but also to find new forms of cooperation.
A reciprocal visit by an Italian delegation is planned for May next year.
The implementation of the Project aims to encourage local people, businesses, institutions and organisations to engage in new, diversified, higher quality activities that respond to market needs (to create, develop, improve services and products in rural areas and to cooperate to increase sales and bring customers to their region). In order to help the participants of the Project to create and develop products and services and their complexes, the conditions for creating new workplaces in rural areas will be facilitated.
